AARP offers safety course for older drivers

Seniors who would like to participate in the AARP 55 Alive Driver Safety Program have an opportunity this month when the course is offered from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, June 16, and Tuesday, June 17, at the Bangor Housing Authority, 161 Davis Road.

The course is taught by AARP driving safety instructor Dawn Byrne-Richmond for a fee of $10. You can call her at 947-7883 to register.

Seniors also should be aware that, according to information provided by the AARP 55 Alive Driver Safety Program, automobile insurance discounts are offered in most states for those who take the course that is designed for drivers 50 and older.

For those who are unable to take the course at this time but feel the need for this type of instruction, Byrne-Richmond also offers a private refresher driving for senior citizens.

Rod and Laura Wiley, co-owners of The Earth First Gallery, invite you to “Come Meet the Artist” 1-4 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at this gallery described as “openly in pursuit of beauty and art,” at 128 Hammond St. in Bangor.

Laura Wiley explained that the gallery offers “monthly art shows by local artists,” and this month, artist John LeBlanc will be the featured guest at this free event.

LeBlanc’s show is titled “Twists on Tradition,” Wiley wrote, describing “art that is traditional in subject matter, but unique in style.”

The public is invited to visit the gallery 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Toni Mailloux reports Belfast Public Health Nursing Association is offering a free blood pressure clinic 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at its office, 119 Northport Ave.

Theresa Bragg reports openings are still available for the Good Samaritan Agency’s eighth annual women’s golf tournament with registration at noon and a golf clinic at 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

The nine-hole, four-woman-team scramble includes contests, awards, prizes and a social hour after the tournament.

Bragg invites you to “come have fun and raise money for a good cause.”

This nonprofit Bangor agency, founded in 1902, offers programs for single parents that include alternative education and child care as well as adoption services. All proceeds benefit those served by Good Sam.

The first Greyt Reunion and Open House, sponsored by Maine Greyhound Placement Service, is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22, rain or shine, at MGPS, 249 Old Belgrade Road in Augusta.

Lauren Glueck reported that the event will feature door prizes, kennel tours, silent auctions, games for the hounds, a dog spa, raffles, vendors, photo contests, Chinese auctions and dog foot art.

You also will be able to tour the organization’s new onsite clinic.

Doral Thomas e-mailed that her parents, Norman and Amaryl Smith of LaGrange, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, June 21.

“I thought it would bless them to receive a shower of cards,” Thomas wrote of her parents who “know a lot of people who might not be aware of this milestone in their lives.”

Jerry Ballanger of Brewer wrote that the Bangor High School Class of 1948 is planning its 60th reunion for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at Spectacular Event Center in Bangor.

However, the planners are missing a few classmates and wonder if you can help.

BHS ’48 is seeking addresses for Hilda Bowers Scott, Selma Brody, Ruth Burbank Winslow, Joan Capen Cunningham, Lorraine Curtis Rowley, Helen Dixon, Richard Hanson, Aliche Horth, Marsha Kane, Harold Kelleher and Joan King Merriam.

Also missing are Barbara Lovejoy, George Mourkas, Helena Nelson, Jacquelyn Sloat Frost, Lee W. Smith, Rosaline Springer, Mildred Stevens, Genevieve Swett Cope and Harold Whittum.
