LaGrange fire sends man to hospital

LAGRANGE – One homeowner went to the hospital Thursday afternoon with smoke inhalation after a fire at 5437 Bennoch Road (Route 16), according to LaGrange fire Lt. Joe Baker.

The fire started in a back bedroom shortly after 12:30 p.m. at the Lizotte residence. Firefighters were able to contain most of the damage to that area of the home, Baker said.

The owner, whose first name wasn’t available, was taken to the hospital by Three Rivers Ambulance after he tried to put out the flames with fire extinguishers before fire crews arrived, Baker said.

The flames were difficult to fight because there were several additions on the mobile home, including an attached garage that houses Lizotte Auto Body and Repair Welding.

“There were two or three different roofs,” Baker said. “It flared back up in the roof in one section.”

Firefighters had to cut through the ceiling in the bedroom to get to the flare-up.

“Basically we contained it to one room,” Baker said.

Once the fire appeared to be out, fire crews used a thermal-imaging camera to check for hot spots.

Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. was called to disconnect the power lines from the house.

Baker said that the origin of the fire might have been electrical. He was unsure if the home was insured and said that the family wouldn’t be able to stay in it.

Fire crews from LaGrange and Alton went to the fire scene.
