KVHC team looks to reach Relay for Life goal

Best wishes for success in meeting a $2,000 fundraising goal are extended to members of the Katahdin Valley Health Center team participating in the first Katahdin Area Relay for Life event today and Saturday, June 21, at Stearns High School in Millinocket.

KVHC team members include Eliza Currie, Melissa Berry Pollman, Joni Chaloux, Belinda Desmond, Adam Dickey, Gerda Goodwin, Jaime Green, Brittani Pelkey, Corky Pinette, Julie Racine, Tracey Sawtelle, Kimberli Skinner, David Wilkins, Debra Wilkins and Miranda Willett.

Proceeds from Relay for Life events benefit the work of the American Cancer Society and, Nicholson reminds, “the funds go to a worthy cause that benefits all of us.”

Geneva Frost e-mailed that a yard sale to benefit the building of the Otis Habitat House is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 21, at Otis General Store.

“There are many items to view, and great bargains,” Frost wrote.

The rain date is Sunday, June 22.

The Otis Habitat House is being built for the family of 10-year-old Nicholas Hovey, who has cystic fibrosis.

The public is invited to a Somerset County Public Safety softball event at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at the Skowhegan High School field.

Several municipal and county public service employees will compete against in softball games to benefit the family of Patricia Schade of Lincolnville, the widow of Waldo County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Mark Schade, who died in an April diving accident.

Participants include police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and public employees.

There is no admission fee for the games, but donation buckets will be placed around the field and the event will feature raffles, an auction, bake sale, hot dogs and soda, and the opportunity to have your picture taken with your favorite player.

Friends and family will hold a benefit cookout at noon Saturday, June 21, for Rose Daudelin at 173 Wing Road in Levant.

Donations will be accepted and most appreciated, to help with expenses incurred by Daudelin, who recently was diagnosed with advanced breast and lung cancer.

A benefit supper and auction is being held for Frank and Shannon Olsen Grass III of Arundel who lost their son to premature birth.

The fundraiser begins with dinner from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by the auction, Saturday June 21, at the Sherman Recreation Department.

Admission is by donation.

Melissa Grass e-mailed that anyone who would like to make a donation to the auction may call Cathy Jacobs at 267-4903.

The young couple previously lived in the Sherman area, Grass said of Frank, who is from Silver Ridge, and Shannon, who is from Mount Chase.

As part of their missionary service in the Eastport area, 50 members of All Souls Students in Service to Jesus Christ, known as ASSIST-JC, of Bangor, along with their 20 adult advisers, will lead “Search for Hidden Treasure” Vacation Bible School.

The Vacation Bible School is being sponsored jointly by the Perry Congregational Church and St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church of Pleasant Point, wrote Ann Carter of the summer program that runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 23, through Friday, June 27, at Perry Congregational Church.

The program concludes with a family-style barbecue and picnic at 5 p.m. Friday, at the church.

All area children are welcome to participate in this program, and more information is available by calling 853-6020.

Sue McKay e-mailed the remaining Bangor Band Concerts Park are 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays, except for the Independence Day concert on Friday, July 4, at the Bandstand, in Paul Bunyan Park on Main Street, and the Old Town Public Library Concert, Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Waterfront Park in Old Town.

The concerts are June 24, at the Bandstand; July 1, Fairmount Park; July 8, at the Bandstand; July 15, at the Bandstand; July 22, the Bangor Waterfront; July 29, Chapin Park; Aug. 5 at the Bandstand; and Aug. 12, at the Bandstand.

For readers who are unaware how very special the Bangor Band is, it was first organized in 1859, making it one of the oldest community bands in the country.
