Bangor’s Josh Giles registers double-eagle in Hampden

Loud noises on a golf course are generally frowned upon because they can distract other players during their strokes.

Josh Giles of Bangor can be excused, though, for the noise he made at Hampden Country Club in Thursday night’s men’s league after he holed out an 8-iron from 160 yards on the 420-yard, par-5 ninth hole for a double-eagle 2.

“I hooted and hollered about it, pretty loud,” said Giles.

Initially, Giles didn’t realize the stroke had turned out so well.

“I thought it was long,” said the 23-year-old of his second shot, “and I walked up and looked long, but it wasn’t long. Then I thought it was in, so I looked and it was in.”

One of his playing partners, Bill Hall, initially thought Giles’ shot had gone in.

“I looked at him [and made] like it was long,” said Giles, who has been playing since he was 8. “He thought it was headed right at it.”

The shot helped Giles, Hall and teammates Steven Fitz-Perkins and Gary Ellingwood win the nine-hole team competition with a 9-under-par 27, three strokes clear of the field.

Jones snaps course record

Ricky Jones of Thomaston smashed the course record at Rockland Golf Club last Saturday by shooting a 10-under-par 60.

Jones, a former Maine Open champ, two-time Maine Amateur champ and four-time Whited Ford Paul Bunyan Amateur winner, posted 10 birdies and eight pars to break the old mark of 62 set by Jeff Seavey at least 15 years ago, according to Rockland head pro Keenan Flanagan.

“He was hitting the ball real well,” said Flanagan. “He said he felt like he could have shot 56. He had three putts that came close and lipped one out.”

Jones opened with a birdie on the 528-yard, par-5 first hole, then picked up his next on the 272-yard, par-4 third hole. While the hole is short, it’s a bit uphill with a tricky two-tiered green.

His third birdie came on the other par-5 on the front, No. 7, and followed it with a birdie on the 414-yard, uphill, dogleg right, par-4 eighth hole and made the turn at 4-under 32.

On the back, he opened with a birdie on the par-3 10th, then birdied 12 and 13, just missed birdie on 14 and birdied 15, 16 and 17 to close with a 28.

Calling all juniors

Bangor Municipal Golf Course is setting up a Junior Golf League starting Monday.

“[Assistant pro] Rob [Jarvis] has been running his junior camps here in July and August the last couple of years,” said head pro Brian Enman, “and now we have a lot of juniors.

“They’ve asked about it, and we thought, “Why not?'”

Jarvis will be conducting the program.

Enman said the nine-hole events will run each Monday, with maybe a couple of exceptions, through August.

“We’ll have different formats to make it interesting and a fun event each week,” said Enman.

Players don’t have to be season pass holders at Bangor in order to participate, either.

“It’s open to all juniors in the area,” said Enman. The weekly fee is $2 for pass holders and $10 for nonmembers.

Players will be split into two divisions, grades 5-8 and grades 9-12.

Registration is at 12:30 p.m. and play beings at 1.

“Players sign up that day,” said Enman. “We’re not taking any preregistrations, but a number of people have called already [looking for information].”

Scramble for Special Olympics

The sixth annual Lee Golf Scramble will be held June 28 at Bangor Muni.

The Lee Golf Scramble was started in 2003 the day after the wedding of Andrea and Brian Lee of Bangor.

Each year, they hosted the annual event for family and friends.

This year, the sixth annual, they decided to combine their scramble tournament with fundraising for the Penobscot Area Special Olympics.

Andrea Lee is an adapted physical education teacher, and the curriculum for her students includes participation in Special Olympic events.

Signing up sponsors has gone well, according to Brian Lee, but they are seeking more players.

Registration starts at 7 a.m. with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

The cost is $80 a person, which includes the golf, cart, lunch, gifts and prizes.

Send checks, payable to Penobscot Area Special Olympics, c/o Carol Ryan, P.O. Box 215, Holden, ME 04429.

For more information, call Brian Lee at 992-7605.

52nd NEWGA coming up

Whitney Hand of Bucksport Golf Club, three-time schoolgirl golf champion, heads up a list of 11 Maine women who will be playing in the 52nd New England Women’s Golf Association Championship next week.

Others signed up to participate include former University of Maine basketball star Liz Coffin of Bangor Muni, Terry Hamm-Morris of Mars Hill Country Club and Gail Gleason of Goose River Golf Course in Rockport.

The tournament, with a field of 108 players, will be held Tuesday through Thursday at Abenaqui Country Club in Rye, N.H.
