In the very best wind locations, a modern wind turbine will generate a bit more than 1,000 kilowatt-hours each year for each square meter (10 square feet) of wind disc. A 90-meter diameter wind turbine (the blade swing area will cover about two football fields) will generate nearly 6.5 million kilowatt-hours per year. The name-plate on such a machine will be a bit over 2 megawatts. Five hundred of these machines would generate about the same quantity of electricity as a standard 600-megawatt coal-burning plant.
