Two University of Maine hockey recruits were selected in the fourth round of the National Hockey League draft in Ottawa on Saturday.
Defenseman Ryan Hegarty was selected by the 2007 champion Anaheim Ducks with the 113th overall pick and center Gustav Nyquist was chosen by the Detroit Red Wings with the 121st pick.
Detroit claimed the Stanley Cup earlier this month.
Both will play for the Black Bears beginning this fall.
NHL teams retain the rights to their draft choices until Aug. 16 following their class’ graduation year.
Hegarty had seven goals and 16 assists in 55 games for the United States National Team Development Program’s Under-18 squad and Nyquist had 11 goals and 20 assists in 24 games for Malmo in the Swedish SuperElit Under-20 team before notching 5 & 5 in seven playoff games.
