Carpenter nabbed after man falls from truck

HOULTON – A Chelsea businessman who failed to stop early Saturday morning after one of his employees fell from the bed of his pickup truck was arrested.

Gregory Doughty, 28, a carpenter who was in the Houlton area on a job, and three of his employees had left the bar at the Shiretown Motor Inn when the incident occurred at about 1 a.m. Saturday, according to Sgt. Troy Fitzpatrick of the Houlton Police Department.

Michael Trytek, 23, of Chelsea jumped onto the tailgate of Doughty’s 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck while Doughty spun his tires in the motor inn’s parking lot, according to Fitzpatrick. When Doughty left the parking lot, went around a corner on Route 1 and accelerated, Trytek fell off the vehicle, he said. Doughty did not stop despite being told by a passenger that Trytek had fallen from the truck, according to Fitzpatrick.

Trytek was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital where he remained throughout the day for observation.

Doughty was charged for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and for aggravated driving to endanger. He was taken to the Aroostook County Jail where he posted bail of $1,750 and was released.

At some point after Trytek fell from the vehicle, Doughty changed places with his passenger and an employee, Ramon Devilla, 27, of Gardiner, Fitzpatrick said. Devilla was charged for operating after suspension and violation of conditions of release. He also was wanted on a Lewiston warrant, but the Houlton officer had no details about it.

Devilla was taken to the Aroostook County Jail where he remains without bail because of the violation of conditions of release.

A third employee of Doughty’s who also was in the vehicle was not charged.

Officers involved in the investigation included Jared Sylvia and Stewart Kennedy of the Houlton Police Department. They were assisted by the Houlton fire and ambulance and the Maine State Police.
