BARRINGTON, Nova Scotia – Some lobster fishermen in Canada are angry that as many as 45 inshore draggers are expected to arrive in waters off southwestern Nova Scotia on Monday to begin dragging the bottom for scallops.
The lobstermen say the scallop rakes smash, puncture and cut up the lobsters while damaging the ocean bottom.
But a member of the Full Bay Scallop Association said they have been fishing in the area for years and have as much right to be there as lobstermen. The association says the boats will carry observers for one trip, and if there’s any sign of lobster catches they’ll have to move.
As in Maine, the lobster catch in Nova Scotia is worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
