COLUMBUS, Ohio – Boothbay High sophomore Matthew Forgues won the gold medal Sunday in the 10-kilometer race walk at the USATF National Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Forgues took the lead from the start and posted a time of 49 minutes, 1.41 seconds.

Skowhegan’s Grant Bacon, a freshman at Ohio’s Cedarville University, placed fifth in the race, while Christie Bernier, a sophomore at Edward Little of Auburn, finished fifth in the girls 10K.

All three Mainers earned All-American status.

Eight other Maine race walkers competed Saturday at the Nike Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Greensboro, N.C.

Kayte Demont, a senior from North Yarmouth Academy, finished fourth in the girls’ 1-mile race walk, while Mt. Blue of Farmington freshman Emily Reed was eighth and Bonny Eagle of Standish sophomore Ashley Cox was ninth.

Maine also had strong representation in the boys race, with Matt Bolton (Bonny Eagle), Lucas Seiferth (Gorham), Keith Tremblay and Evan Favreau of Edward Little and Kris Nadeau (Mt. Blue) finishing third through seventh.
