KENNEBUNK – Opposition is brewing against a plan by the Kennebunk Water District to sell water to the water company Poland Spring for the next 30 years.

More than 100 people showed up at a public meeting Sunday night to speak out against a proposed deal to grant Poland Spring a contract to draw as much as 250,000 gallons a day from district-owned land in Wells.

Water district trustees are scheduled to vote on the deal on Wednesday.

The water district’s superintendent said the deal could create jobs and provide a stream of income to help keep water bills down.

But critics said they don’t like the idea of selling the water to a huge corporation and aren’t sure if the aquifer can handle the amount of water being extracted.

The Kennebunk Water District serves customers in Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Wells.
