HOULTON – A Monticello man who told police Monday evening that anger prompted him to throw a rock through a large plate-glass window at a downtown business was charged with aggravated criminal mischief after the incident.

Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin said Tuesday that the crime took place at Allies Inc. at 40 Market Square. The facility has a plate-glass window at the front of the office.

Asselin said an employee was in the office just before 5:30 p.m. when she heard a loud crash. She saw the broken window and also saw two people outside on the sidewalk.

The rock was thrown through the window with such force that it embedded itself in the sheetrock of the wall, according to Asselin.

Officer Ezekiel Collins quickly found Josue Echevarria, 19, of Monticello walking on Highland Avenue. He soon placed Echevarria under arrest and took him to the Aroostook County Jail.

Echevarria told police he threw the rock at the window because he was “mad.”

His bail was set at $500 cash and he will appear in court to answer to the charge, which is a Class C felony because of the amount of damage involved, on Sept. 18. A Class C crime carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.
