Members and friends of the Presque Isle Garden Club invite you to join them for Sundays in the Garden.

Roberta Griffiths reports this event features six Presque Isle gardens open to the public now through August.

Admission is $3 per garden, payable on the day of the tour at the featured garden, and the hours for each tour are from noon to 3 p.m., rain or shine.

“We are attempting to show gardens as they evolve through the season,” Griffiths explained, “offering different plants in bloom, unlike a one-time tour.

“After six months of winter here, we are excited about our gardens!” she added.

The first tour is noon-3 p.m. Sunday June 29, at the home of Pat Rathbun, 129 Hardy St.

The second tour is Sunday, July 13, and features the garden of Julie Freeman at 14 Coburn Ave. Next is the garden of Tammy Walton, Sunday, July 20, at 8 Dupont St., followed by the Andi Dyer garden, Sunday, July 27, at 205 Fort Road.

On Sunday, Aug. 3, visit the garden of Nadine Moreau, 111 Hanson Lake Road, and conclude your tours Sunday, Aug. 10, in the garden of Darlene Higgins, 135 Higgins Road.

Homeowners will be on site to answer questions about plant materials and to lead tours.

Proceeds from this event “will support our projects, which include downtown beautification,” Griffiths wrote of such gardens as the one at the public library and the Main Street bed, and will also help fund a scholarship for a student attending the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Shirley Kenney wrote the Women’s Fellowship of The First Congregational Church of Searsport is hosting its fifth annual Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 27-28, at the Searsport Information Booth on the corner of Main and Norris streets.

More than 1,000 perennials ranging from lilies to bee balm and iris will be offered, and proceeds will benefit “local, national and international missions,” Kenney wrote of the “Food Cupboard, local scholarships, Seafarers Friends Maritime Mission, One Great Hour of Sharing and Gateway Christian Fellowship in the Philippines.”

Alison Rector invites you to hear Dell, Susan and Richard Hyssong, a Southern Gospel Music Family, in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, June 27, at Monroe Community Church on Route 139.

“Admission is free,” Rector wrote, “although a goodwill offering will be accepted.”

Carol Higgins Taylor hopes you will attend the Animal Orphanage annual Garage Sale 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Old Town garage on Airport Road.

All proceeds benefit the orphanage which not only takes in strays for adoption but may in some instances for “animals who are not adoptable,” become a permanent home.

“This is an expense as well,” she wrote in urging you to “come to the yard sale and show your support” for the work of this organization.

Gene Bland e-mailed the annual Village Fair is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Trinitarian Congregational Church on Main Street in Castine.

The fair, sponsored by the ecumenical Dr. Mary Cushman Circle, “features crafts of many kinds, a silent auction, attic treasures, a large yard sale, flowering plants, a bake sale, specialty food items and books,” Bland wrote.

You can also purchase a lunch of crab rolls, hot dogs, salads and homemade strawberry shortcake, and proceeds will help “support the church and several local, regional and national missions projects of the Circle.”

Tom Testa e-mailed the Downeast Rail Heritage Preservation Trust and the Downeast Scenic Railroad’s annual meeting is 10 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at Washington Junction in Hancock.

“We will be electing directors and officers, and giving our members and the public an opportunity to inspect our newly-added equipment and to see the work the Trust volunteers” performed last year, Testa wrote.

Refreshments will be served and work on the line and the yard will be conducted after the meeting. The rain date is 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12.
