AUGUSTA – Amy Hackett didn’t expect to be crowned Miss Maine Softball.
As a matter of fact, the Bangor High School senior didn’t even know she was nominated.
So it was a little bit of a surprise to Hackett when she earned the prestigious award as the Pine Tree State’s top senior softball player between games at Thursday’s Senior All-Star festivities at Cony Family Field.
“I didn’t even know I was up for it to tell you the truth, but what a nice surprise,” said Hackett, who helped lead the Rams to the No. 2 seed in Eastern Maine Class A and a trip to the regional finals this spring.
“I didn’t expect it. It’s a good way to go out.”
Hackett was also named the Eastern Maine Class A Player of the Year.
Also garnering regional honors were Bri Hanscom from Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln in Class B, Kayla Higgins of Sumner of East Sullivan in Class C and Ashland’s Whitney Flint in Class D.
Earning Western Maine honors were Julie Dimatteo of South Portland in Class A, Megan Blier of Wells in Class B, Monmouth Academy’s Jenn Lola in Class C and Buckfield’s Kasey Farrington in Class D.
Even though her East All-Stars lost by a 9-1 count, that score didn’t matter to Hackett.
“We had a good time,” she said. “It was definitely a good time to play with the girls you play against all year.”
And what a way to end a terrific senior year in which her Rams embarked on their deepest postseason run in almost a decade.
“Oh definitely, its a good way to go out,” she said.
