AUGUSTA – Bus systems around Maine will give free rides on Fridays this summer, a move aimed at encouraging low-cost travel options at a time of soaring gasoline prices.

Gov. John Baldacci says the “Free Fare Fridays” campaign will return next month after a successful run last fall.

Under the program, 18 bus systems across the state will give free rides on Fridays in July. The Lewiston-Auburn bus system will extend the offering through August.

The program is a partnership among local bus systems, the Maine Transportation Department and the Go Maine commuter program.

Bus ridership went up sharply when the program first was offered last November and December.

Participating bus systems in the Bangor Daily News readership area include Aroostook Regional Transportation, Bangor BAT, Downeast Transportation, and Island Explorer.

Information on the bus systems across the state is available at www.gomaine.org.
