BRUNSWICK – Coastal Thunder of Brunswick advanced to today’s semifinal round in the boys under-16 age division of the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships with a 2-0 victory over a Pennsylvania team Sunday.
Coastal Thunder will play a 2 p.m. contest at field 1 at Bowdoin College. Coastal Thunder opened with a 6-1 victory over a Rhode Island team on Friday and played to a 1-1 tie against a Maryland team on Saturday.
Teams ranging from under-12 to under-19 are competing in the regional tourney. A total of 70 of the 272 teams were advancing to today’s semifinal round. The championship games are scheduled Tuesday at Bowdoin.
Ten boys teams and nine girls teams represented Maine in the tourney, including two under-12 teams from the Hampden-based Blackbear United Football Club.
A Connecticut team defeated Blackbear United 9-1 in a boys game on Friday while a Vermont team shut out Blackbear United 7-0 in girls round-robin play.
On Saturday, a New Hampshire team blanked Blackbear United 4-0 in a boys tourney game, while a New Hampshire team defeated Blackbear United 3-0 in a girls contest.
The under-12 tourney featured eight-on-eight competition.
