BANGOR – A Mexican national appeared Monday in U.S. District Court on charges of re-entry after deportation.
Hector Mondragon-Zizumbo, 38, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Margaret Kravchuk. He waived his right to a detention hearing and agreed to be held without bail pending the resolution of his case.
If convicted, he faces up to two years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
Mondragon-Zizumbo was observed Saturday by an agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in a parking lot in Brewer, according to court documents. He was arrested later that day in Brewer after being stopped by local police for an alleged violation of state law.
He was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer registered to Erick O. Orozco-Zizumbo of Gouldsboro. Orozco-Zizumbo has not been charged in connection with Mondragon-Zizumbo’s arrest.
The relationship between the two men was not explained in court documents.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Lowell, who is prosecuting the case, declined to comment on what Mondragon-Zizumbo was doing in Maine or the connection between the defendant and the owner of the Ford Explorer.
Mondragon-Zizumbo was deported in November 2006 after he was apprehended in Ellsworth but not charged with a crime, according to court documents. He was arrested on Jan. 15 and 18, 2007, in Arizona and allowed to return voluntarily to Mexico.
He allegedly told an ICE agent that five months ago he crossed the border through Arizona.
