HANCOCK – A home on Moons Ledges Road was destroyed Tuesday morning by a fire of unknown origin, according to the local fire chief.
The fire at the Sutherland residence, about a half-mile down Moons Ledges Road from East Side Road, was reported at about 7:50 a.m., Hancock Fire Chief Chris Holmes said Tuesday. The blaze flattened most of the home and left behind a charred shell.
“When we got there it was a fully involved structure fire,” Holmes said.
The homeowners had left for work when the fire was reported. No people or animals were injured in the blaze, and the homeowners were unable to indicate how the fire may have started, he said.
“The damage was too severe [to determine the origin],” he said.
An investigator from the State Fire Marshal’s Office also came to examine the scene and reached the same conclusion, Holmes said.
The home was insured, according to the chief. The owners are in touch with the Red Cross and have an offer to stay with friends, he said.
Holmes said 15 firefighters from Hancock, along with an undetermined number from the neighboring towns of Sullivan and Sorrento, fought the blaze.
