BREWER – Since TV’s “Spotlight on Youth” in the early 1960s, Mainers in this corner of the woods have enjoyed the talents of Sebec native David Mallett.
The internationally known singer and songwriter will join singer-songwriter Bill Morrissey for the eighth annual Solidarity Celebration, 5:30-9 p.m. Friday, July 4, at 20 Ivers St., Brewer.
Mallett may be best-known for “The Garden Song,”
Inch by inch,
Row by row,
Gonna make this garden grow.
In recent years, his compelling music also has found him recording excerpts from Thoreau’s “The Maine Woods” to music, to great acclaim.
Mallett has performed at a variety of peace rallies and benefit concerts.
The Solidarity celebration will feature guest speakers, including U.S. Rep. Michael Michaud, labor movement leaders and the Bush Legacy Bus.
Food will be served, including local organic lamb, homemade vegetarian dishes and a union chili cook-off.
Tickets are $10, $20 family. Proceeds will benefit laid-off workers and the Eastern Maine Labor Council. For information, call 989-5860, or visit www.foodandmedicine.org.
