Maine Sting soccer
BANGOR – The Maine Sting earned one point on a late goal by Andre Anderson during the soccer match against Queen City FC on June 21. The Sting battled hard in a well-played game, but could only walk away with a tie.
Sting goal keeper Angel Abunez had a great game, replacing regular starter David Stevenson. Stevenson suffered a shoulder injury in the previous week’s match against Long Island Academy and was forced to leave the game in the second half.
In the 15th minute of action, Queen City took a free kick from near the half field line that forced Abunez to come far off his line to kick the ball out of traffic. He came up big for the Sting five minutes later and made another big save to keep his side in the game.
During the 25th minute, Queen City put one in the back of the net, but it was waved off as the offside flag was up. The Sting were quick to counter and worked up the field, but couldn’t put the shot on target.
The end of the first half was packed with action as Queen City attacked the Sting goal, but Abunez blocked a shot, and then dove to save the shot from the rebound. The Sting worked their way up the field and earned a free kick 22 yards from goal. John Benson stepped up to take the shot, but put it just wide.
Queen City scored two minutes into the second half on a long goal that forced Abunez to come way off his line. He ran out near the edge of the box, but misjudged the ball. The Sting continued to attack the Queen City goal, but the goalkeeper made numerous saves to keep the Sting off the scoreboard.
The Sting players thought they had tied the game in the first minute of stoppage time when Andy Varnes fired a shot from outside. The Queen City goalkeeper went up to grab it, and when he landed he fell backward into the goal, but the linesman didn’t think the ball fully crossed the line.
There was no question that the ball was in the net one minute later when the Sting gave everything they had to attacking the goal.
Everyone was pushed up in one last effort to score, and three shots were fired in quick succession before Andre Anderson finally put it away. Moments later, the final whistle blew, giving the Sting another point this season.
