Brewer rolls by Bangor Falcons show off balance, win 10th

BANGOR – The opportunistic Brewer Falcons were unfazed after spotting Bangor a quick 1-0, first-inning lead during Thursday night’s American Legion Zone 1 baseball game at Mansfield Stadium.

In fact, Brewer righthander Chase Daniels not only held the Comrades scoreless the rest of the way, the Falcons scored 15 unanswered runs sparked by a pair of seven-run rallies in the third and sixth innings en route to a 15-1 victory.

Brewer, which improved to a Zone 1-best 10-1, sent 11 men to the plate in the third and sixth innings, taking advantage of Bangor errors to get the leadoff batter on each time.

“Anytime you give a team like Brewer extra outs it can come back to get you and it obviously did,” said Bangor coach Fred Lower, whose club dips to 9-4.

Brewer’s offensive output was balanced, as all nine starters in coach Dave Morris’ lineup collected at least one hit while seven knocked in at least one run.

Daniels aided his own cause with a 4-for-5 output, including a two-run single in the third and a double and run scored in the sixth.

After the Falcons’ seven-run third-inning uprising, Daniels settled into a consistent groove.

“It relaxed me a little bit so I could throw my pitches a little bit better,” said Daniels, who benefited from some outstanding defensive plays from his infielders, in particular Ricky Adams at second base.

With one out and runners on first and second in the fourth, Bangor’s Jordan Clarke hit a sharp liner that appeared ticketed for right-center field but Adams made a diving stab for the second out, and Daniels got out of the inning one pitch later.

“I think even though offensively we played well I think we played very good defense,” said Morris. “Bangor had some very hits and we were in the right spots.”

Daniels, first baseman Chris Maguire and third baseman Mike Kotredes led the Falcons with three RBIs apiece. Kotredes singled in two runs with a single in the third and catcher Cam Wadleigh cranked a two-run triple to spark Brewer’s seven-run surge in the sixth.

“Tonight was just our night … they did a good job I’m really proud of our kids, they came out ready to play,” said Morris.

Daniels improved his record to 2-0, scattering six hits and giving up one run while striking out eight in a complete-game effort.

The Comrades had a couple of chances to claw back into the game, particularly in the fourth, and they had some good swings against Daniels but couldn’t find holes in the Falcons’ defense.

“That’s baseball, sometimes you hit it hard but you hit it right at someone,” Lower said. “When we did start to get some guys on base they did a great job of shutting it down.”

Adams drew two walks while scoring two runs out of the No. 1 spot in the order to go with an RBI single in the third for Brewer.

Gordie Webb plated Shane Walton with a first-inning single for Bangor’s only run.
