There are a couple of reasons Harris Golf Co. has rolled out a new promotion for Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono, and both involve introductions of a sort.
“Part of what we want to do, during reconstruction, is to try to give the public a vision of what we want to accomplish,” said Jeff Bickford, director of golf at PVCC.
“And we want it to be something where people can feel what it’s like to be a member for a day,” he added.
The formerly private club is running a special where anybody can purchase a pass for four for $99. The passes have to be purchased by the end of July, but they’re good for the rest of the season.
The number of passes will be limited, according to Bickford, but there is no definite number. The club will try to accommodate as many people as possible.
“We want the public, but we don’t want to insult the membership who paid up,” Bickford pointed out.
Also, people can purchase more than one pass, within reason.
“If somebody wants to get two or three or four passes, that’s not an issue,” said Bickford. “But we don’t want somebody buying 20 passes and tying up the course for a day.”
The Harris Golf Co. has run a similar promotion at Sunday River Golf Club in Newry.
“That’s gone real well,” Bickford said. Because of that, they worked up the PVCC deal two to three weeks ago.
The usual rate for someone coming in off the street is $45 per round during the renovation, said head pro Chad Curley.
“Last year, it was $60,” said Curley.
Bickford hopes a lot of people take advantage of the offer.
“We want to get rid of as many stereotypes as possible,” he said. “We have an outstanding golf course with exceptional potential, and we believe golf should be something everyone can take part in.”

Jones headed for Publinx
Ricky Jones of Thomaston, who finished third Thursday in the Maine Amateur Golf Championship at Biddeford-Saco Country Club, has to stay in tournament mode.
He leaves today for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo., just outside Denver.
“I tried qualifying when it’s not the same week as the Maine Amateur,” he said.
This was one such year.
The tournament has 36 holes of medal play Monday and Tuesday. The low 64 players advance to match play starting Wednesday. The tournament continues until Saturday’s 36-hole final between the last two players.
WMSGA Championship
Signup for the 78th WMSGA Championship continues through Tuesday.
The field is limited to 96 players, so if more than 96 sign up, the lowest handicap players get the spots.
The tournament is scheduled for Aug. 4-6 at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.
Double eagle II
About three weeks, Josh Giles scored a double-eagle 2 on the par-5 ninth hole at Hampden Country Club. Last week he witnessed a second one.
Jon Small knocked in a 6-iron from 170 yards for his deuce during men’s league play, and it was also witnessed by club owner Elmer Gamble.
Once again, Giles’ team was the winner thanks to the 2. They were tied with another team, and the tie was broken by starting with the last hole and working backward.
Small’s 2 ended the count in a hurry.
