Anyone who ever attended and thoroughly enjoyed the Greek Balls held in Bangor several years ago will be pleased to know that Bangor Rotarians Susan Jonason and Cathy Speronis are working with members of St. George Greek Orthodox parish to bring back this delightful event.
Now touted as “the first annual Big Fat Greek Dance,” you can enjoy Greek appetizers, Greek line dancing and Greek hospitality beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, July 18, at Wellman Commons on the grounds of the former Bangor Theological Seminary on Union Street in Bangor.
According to the event release, advance tickets are $25 and are available at restaurants owned by members of St. George Church: Angelo’s Pizzeria on Hammond Street, Bangor House of Pizza off Stillwater Avenue in The Centre Mall, and Captain Nick’s on Union Street, all in Bangor.
Tickets at the door will be $30.
The hosts suggest you bring a little extra cash so you can purchase balloons that contain prizes donated by local businesses, and want you to know that beer, wine and ouzo will be available.
For information, call St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 945-9588, and leave a message for Jonason, who will return your call.

“The program promises to be a most interesting one, being presented by a local sculptor,” Robertson wrote.
Refreshments will be served.

A nature photography exhibit of the work of the late Sid Bahrt, who died in 2007, is being hosted throughout the month of July at the Pembroke Library, reports Linda Gralenski.
Bahrt was “an internationally known wildlife photographer whose images appeared in many magazines and books,” including his “A Wilderness of Birds,” Gralenski wrote.
Before retiring to Pembroke, Bahrt ran a New York City advertising business.
“He soon became one of the founders of the area Audubon chapter, a supporter of the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge and organizer of the Quoddy Spill Prevention Group,” Gralenski wrote of the man who “also traveled throughout Washington County showing nature slides to schoolchildren.”
To help support young Pembroke residents who want to attend the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, he and his wife, Hazel Bahrt, established a scholarship in their names, and “any funds realized through the purchase of these pictures will be added to the scholarship fund,” Gralenski wrote.
Helen Gordon reports the Sullivan Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary is selling its Sorrento-Sullivan Recreation Center 50th anniversary tree ornaments.
The tree ornament sale, which runs through July, not only commemorates the 50th anniversary of the recreation center, Gordon wrote, but will also serve “as a fundraiser for the center as well,” since the auxiliary “is donating all profits to the center as part of a major fundraising campaign … to help meet the expenses of keeping this community center operating.”
The limited-edition, individually gift-boxed items are $10 each and can be purchased with cash, check or money order through the Sullivan town office, 1888 U.S. Highway 1, Sullivan 04664.
For information, call 422-6282 or 422-6719.
