All about trappers

BRADLEY – “Trappers!” will be a special event 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Leonard’s Mills in Bradley.

The activity will offer a historic perspective on the importance of these men and their trade to Maine’s early commerce and history.

Admission to most events at the Maine Forest and Logging Museum is $5, $2 for children ages 2 to 12, free to members. Plenty of free parking is available. For information, call 581-2871 or visit www.leonardsmills.com.

Trekking in Nepal

BANGOR – Many people dream about trekking in Nepal. One local adventurer does it on a regular basis and he will meet with local outdoor enthusiasts to tell them about one of his recent trips up the Solu Khumbu Valley to the Everest Base Camp.

The Eastern Maine Chapter of the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at Epic Sports, 6 Central St.

The meeting will feature a photo slide show by Steve Shepard of Brewer-based ASA Adventure Travel, who will talk about a three-week Himalayan trekking adventure he led in Nepal.

Shepard also will talk about his attempt to climb Island Peak, Imja Tse 20,305 feet, one of the greatest trekking peaks in the Himalayas. The climb included a nontechnical route that traverses the foot of the 8,000-feet-high south face of Lhotse. The itinerary first goes up the Khumbu Valley to Everest Base Camp and Kala Pattar before attempting Island Peak.

The club’s eastern Maine chapter has added a number of local activities for the spring season. Members and others interested in the outdoors are encouraged to take a look at the calendar of events at www.moac.org to learn about midweek evening walks in Bangor, new member hikes, a new progressive hike series where each hike is a bit more challenging, weekly paddles on local lakes and ponds, trips into Acadia National Park, and group bike rides.

The club meets in Bangor each month and has a presentation on an outdoor adventure or a topic of local interest. Club activities take place statewide and members communicate via e-mail lists to announce volunteer organized trips and spontaneous outdoor adventures. Visitors may attend meetings free of charge.

Softball clinic

ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for its Grand Slam Softball Clinic 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, July 28-Aug. 1, at the Orono High School softball field. The cost is $10. For information, call the rec office at 866-5065.

Hoops for Him

BANGOR – The Hoops for Him Basketball Camp will be held Monday-Saturday, Aug. 4-8, at Penobscot Christian School in Bangor for boys and girls entering grades three through eight. The camp for grade three through five will run 8:30 a.m.-noon. The camp for grade six through eight will run 1-4 p.m.

School Director Tim Pearson will run the morning program, and school Assistant Director Brock Bradford, a PCS graduate and Husson College standout, will run the afternoon program.

Rod and Gun Club

BUCKSPORT – The Bucks Mills Rod and Gun Club invites the public and their families to an open house 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the clubhouse, 359 Bucks Mills Road.

The event will feature gun displays, fly-fishing demonstrations, fly tying, trapping displays, and a turkey calling demonstration. Club members will be available to give information about rifle and archery ranges, hunter safety program, annual fishing derby, the club library, club charities, membership and more.

Children’s events, weather permitting, will be a supervised BB shoot, archery shoot and a fly casting contest.

A raffle will be conducted and door prizes will be awarded.

For lunch, crabmeat rolls and hot dogs will be available for purchase.

Admission and activities at the open house are free.
