PORTLAND – A New Hampshire man charged with a 22-year-old murder in Portland has pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Cumberland County Superior Court.
Roy Bernier, 60, who was arrested Friday at his Manchester, N.H., apartment, was ordered held without bail pending a bail hearing tentatively set for Aug. 14.
Bernier, a disabled veteran who served two tours in Vietnam, is accused of strangling Mary Kelley, 33, whose body was found April 26, 1986, in the bathroom of her Congress Street apartment.
After the brief hearing Wednesday, Bernier’s court-appointed lawyer told reporters that he was concerned about his client’s mental condition. Anthony Sineni said Bernier has no criminal record and has been living quietly in Manchester on a $724 monthly disability check.
