The six-team field for this year’s American Legion Zone 1 tournament baseball is set, with five of the teams back from last year’s playoff field.
The double-elimination tournament begins Friday and runs through Monday, July 28, at the Winkin Baseball Complex on the campus of Husson College in Bangor.
Defending zone champion Brewer is the top seed with an 18-2 record, followed by 2007 state runnerup Bangor, which was 14-5 entering its regular-season finale against Orono on Sunday. Even with a loss in that game that would leave the Comrades tied with Trenton at 14-6, Bangor would win the tiebreaker for second place based on two regular-season wins over the Acadians.
Trenton is the third seed, with Steamboat Petroleum of Waldo County fourth at 13-7.
Hampden and Penquis finished with identical 11-9 records, but Hampden earned the tiebreaker for the fifth seed because the teams it defeated amassed 90 victories, compared to 82 for the teams Penquis defeated, according to Zone 1 commissioner Dave Paul.
Hampden earned that advantage largely thanks to its 5-2 win over Brewer on Thursday, the first of four straight wins by to end the season that enabled the Riverdogs to fight off Lincoln and Motor City of Bangor for a playoff berth.
Brewer will face sixth-seeded Penquis in Friday’s first Zone 1 tournament game at 1 p.m., followed by Bangor against Hampden at 4 p.m. and Trenton against Steamboat Petroleum at 7 p.m.
Three games also are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday that will determine the two teams that will represent the zone at the American Legion state tournament to be held in Augusta beginning Saturday, Aug. 2.
The zone tournament concludes with a one- or two-game championship round next Monday.
