Rockland vigil planned tonight for slaying victim

ROCKLAND – A candlelight vigil for peace and justice will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 tonight to celebrate the life and memory of homicide victim Jessica Marie Nichols.

Friends of Nichols are asked to take candles and invite others for a flower-throwing ceremony at Rockland Harbor Park behind the police station on the boardwalk. Flowers are optional.

Steven Pomeroy, 23, of Hope allegedly confessed to Maine State Police that he killed Nichols, 22, of Waldoboro, on July 2. The State Medical Examiner’s Office said that Nichols had been inflicted with multiple sharp-force and blunt-force injuries.

Pomeroy allegedly told police that he lost his temper over a comment she had made about his ex-fiancee and that he bludgeoned and stabbed her. Then, after cleaning up the blood in his apartment at 30 Pearse Road in Hope, he placed her body in the trunk of his car and drove to a friend’s house in another part of Hope, he allegedly told police.

Pomeroy made his initial appearance July 3 at Knox County Superior Court. District Judge Joseph Field charged Pomeroy with murder and ordered him held until a bail hearing.

Pomeroy’s hearing was rescheduled from July 4 until 9 a.m. Monday, July 28, at Knox County Superior Court at defense counsel’s request.
