Vehicle burglars strike in Bangor

BANGOR – About 20 people woke up Thursday morning to find their vehicles had been broken into or their tires had been slashed, Bangor police officials said.

One man was arrested for burglary to a motor vehicle and theft early Thursday, but has not been charged in the tire slashings. However, the possibility of additional charges has not been ruled out, Lt. Steve Hunt said.

“I’m not relating the two, but both happened in the downtown area,” he said.

David Lovallo, 26, of Bangor was found with “a couple-hundred dollars in value” of stolen items, Hunt said. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail after his arrest, which occurred shortly after 4 a.m.

Soon afterward, police began to find the damaged vehicles.

“We had a rash of them,” Bangor police Sgt. Allen Hayden said. “There was a bunch of vehicles hit.”

Tires were slashed on nearly 20 cars and trucks that were parked in the downtown area, where Hammond Street meets Central Street and Main Street, and several other burglaries to motor vehicles were reported. Some of the vehicles were parked on the street, others were in parking lots.

“They’re [investigators] still piecing things together,” Hayden said.

The paperwork for Lovallo was not filed in time for him to be in court Thursday. He remained in jail that evening, a court official said.

Anyone with information about the burglaries or criminal mischief can call the Bangor Police Department at 947-7384.
