BANGOR – A Glenburn man awaiting trial on weapons theft charges was arrested late Tuesday afternoon on outer Hammond Street under suspicion that he might have had stolen guns in the vehicle he was driving, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Lloyd said.
Brett Vigue, 19, is facing charges for stealing guns from his father and grandmother, according to police. When he attempted to sell one of the guns Saturday at a pawnshop in Bangor, the owner recognized that the guns were stolen and refused to purchase them.
The owner reported the incident to police, and Vigue was pulled over and taken into custody Tuesday on outer Hammond Street near Target Industrial Circle.
A quick sweep of the GMC Envoy didn’t turn up any weapons, but Lloyd said the sheriff’s office would continue to investigate.
Vigue was being held Tuesday night at Penobscot County Jail on the following charges, according to Lloyd: theft by unauthorized taking, a Class B felony, for allegedly stealing three guns from his father; theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, Class E, for allegedly stealing an ice auger; two counts of theft by unauthorized taking, for credit cards he allegedly stole from his father in June and checks he stole within the past couple of weeks; two charges of forgery, Class D, relating to the checks and credit cards; one count of use of unauthorized property, for allegedly taking the Envoy that he was driving when police pulled him over.
While being interviewed, Vigue reportedly told police he took the checks and credit cards, and when police found three empty gun pouches in the vehicle, Vigue said he sold the guns to three area pawnshops and gun dealers. Police will try to recover those weapons today.
A female traveling with Vigue was taken into custody but later was released. Lloyd said she is not believed to be directly connected to the thefts.
