PORTLAND – A 46-year-old inmate at Cumberland County Jail has died after being taken to the hospital.

The county Sheriff’s Department says Mark Kemberling of Brunswick, who was serving a seven-day sentence for operating a motor vehicle after license suspension, was in medical distress Wednesday morning when he was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he later died.

The state medical examiner’s office and Portland Police Department are reviewing the incident to determine whether factors other than medical problems contributed to Kemberling’s death.
