New program aids women with cancer

BELFAST – Waldo County General Hospital is offering a new program for women undergoing cancer treatment.

The American Cancer Society’s “Look Good, Feel Better” program provides women with a free, one-time beauty consultation with a licensed cosmetologist or aesthetician. Each participant will receive a complimentary cosmetic kit donated by the cosmetic industry.

Vera Warren of Belfast, who is battling cancer for the second time, attended a session and learned how to apply makeup, different ways to tie a scarf to conceal hair loss and tips to reduce dry skin. Warren learned of the program through the nurses at Waldo County General Hospital’s oncology and infusion therapy department.

At the group session Warren attended, the volunteer cosmetologist provided her and another participant with individual attention and “taught us how to do our makeup and how to use scarves in place of wigs. Thankfully, my hair is coming back in but it was nice to learn the different ways to use them,” Warren said.

“We had a lot of fun laughing. A sense of humor will go a long ways when going through something like this,” she added.

Warren encouraged all women to take this opportunity to attend a session. “Give it a try, you’d probably enjoy it,” she said.

Sessions are offered 5:30-7:30 p.m. the first Monday of each month at Waldo County General Hospital’s Education Center, located at 118 Northport Ave. To register for the Look Good, Feel Better program, contact the WCGH oncology and infusion therapy department at 930-2555.
