The team lineup for the 2008 Senior League World Series in Bangor has changed as the Latin American champs from Maracaibo, Venezuela was disqualified this week for using an ineligible player.
Because it used an ineligible player during the Latin American Tournament in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, the Sierra Maestra team from Maracaibo had to forfeit its title and has been replaced by Pabao of Willemstad, Curacao. Pabao is returning to Bangor for the first time since 2003, when it unsuccessfully attempted to defend its 2002 Senior League World championship.
Pabao was 3-0 in the Latin American tournament and 5-0 overall, outscoring opponents 62-9.
The other teams already in the World Series field are host team Bangor, which beat Brewer to win the District 3 title; Asia-Pacific champ Illam Central of the Philippines, which is returning after advancing to the World Series in 2006; and Europe-Middle East-Africa champion Vilnius, Lithuania, which is making its second straight trip to Bangor.
The 10-teams series starts with opening ceremonies on Saturday, Aug. 9. The first games will be played Sunday, Aug. 10.
