French helps Bangor stave off elimination District 3 champs oust Staten Island, N.Y.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – District 3 champion Bangor got a shutout effort from pitcher Jillian French to avoid elimination and dispatch the team from Staten Island, N.Y., 2-0 in the Eastern Regional Big League Softball tournament Monday.

Autumn Silke and Hannah Morin each had two singles and an RBI to lead 1-1 Bangor. French pitched a two-hitter while notching 11 strikeouts and four walks.

Maine lost its first game Sunday against Delaware 10-0. Maine will next play New Jersey at noon today.

Maryland 8, Ellsworth 6

At West Deptford, N.J., a team from West Salisbury, Md. scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and then needed every bit of it in the seventh as it held on for an 8-6 win over Ellsworth in an elimination game Monday at the Senior Little League Baseball Eastern Regional.

Ellsworth broke a scoreless tie with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Maine champs plated an unearned run in the fourth and followed that with an RBI single by Seth Cote.

West Salisbury tied it in the bottom of the fifth on an unearned run and a sacrifice fly by Bryan Hynes.

In the sixth, West Salisbury sent 10 batters to the plate to break the tie.

Jake Ross got the scoring started with a towering two-run home run to right center.

But in the seventh, West Salisbury got sloppy and Ellsworth got back in it.

Reliever Evan Geary gave way to Wyatt Young during the inning in a pitch-count related move, to try to keep Geary eligible to pitch possibly Wednesday. However, Young walked two batters and hit another, along with two throwing errors behind him, and suddenly it 8-4 with the tying run coming to the plate and the top of the order.

Geary returned to the mound, but Brad Folmer’s single to left made it 8-5 as everyone moved up one base. Another error – the sixth of the game for West Salisbury – made it 8-6 before Jordan Carter’s liner to center was snared for the final out.

Geary earned the win in 2 1/3 innings of work. Mickey Manning, who held West Salisbury in check for the first five innings, took the loss

Camden-Rockport seeks first win

At Bristol, Conn., the Camden-Rockport all-stars are looking for their first win in round robin play at the Little League baseball U.S. East Region tournament.

Camden-Rockport started off the tourney against Shelton National of Connecticut and Shelton won the game 12-1 Friday night. On Saturday, Manchester, N.H. topped Camden 8-1 and on Sunday, the team from West Roxbury, Mass., beat Camden 10-5. Camden will play the Rhode Island state champs on Tuesday after a bye day.

On Sunday, Caleb McFarland led Camden with a double, a home run, and two RBIs. Chandler Crans hit two singles.

Camden outhit West Roxbury 7-4 and the Massachusetts champions committed four errors to Camden’s one, but Camden couldn’t come back from an early 5-1 deficit.

On Saturday, Camden was held to four hits, all singles, as Manchester exploded for four runs in the fourth to break open a 3-1 game.

On Friday, Myles Safford hit a solo home runs, but that wouldn’t be enough to overcome two Camden errors that led to three unearned runs.
