Maine solar energy rebate money gone

AUGUSTA – Maine’s rebate account for solar electrical and thermal energy systems has run dry due to the popularity of the alternative forms of energy.

The Public Utilities Commission-run program ran out of money on June 20, earlier than ever before in its three years of existence.

The program has given a total of $500,000 in rebates per year, first-come, first-served to homeowners and businesses that invest in solar systems. Homeowners were eligible for up to $3,000 and businesses for up to $10,500.

Federal tax credits for solar energy systems are still available.
