Police say Bangor man used hammer in robbery

BANGOR – Police said the man was after drugs and arrived at the victim’s apartment armed with a hammer ready to pound home his desire to get what he wanted.

Arron Brooks, 28, of Bangor was charged with Class A robbery Friday after allegedly threatening a man with a hammer and then robbing him, making off with cash and prescription drugs, according to police.

If convicted of the felony crime, Brooks could face prison time of up to 30 years and a fine of up to $50,000.

The victim, a 25-year-old male, knew Brooks, which led to the quick arrest by Officer Taylor Bagley, Detective Sgt. Chip Hodges said Monday. The victim was not injured during the 11 a.m. incident, which occurred at his State Street apartment, Hodges said.

Brooks’ female acquaintance, Kara Henninger, 29, who shares a Bangor apartment with him, was arrested twice in connection with the crime, Hodges said.

“She was charged [Friday] with obstructing government administration, a Class D misdemeanor, when she interfered with officers preparing to conduct a search of the residence shared by she and Mr. Brooks,” the sergeant said in a press release.

While being questioned and after being told by police not to enter the apartment, Henninger went back to the apartment and locked the door, while “their residence was being secured,” Hodges said.

At around 9 p.m. Sunday, she allegedly called the victim and was arrested again and charged with tampering with a witness, a Class C felony, and violating her conditions of release from her Friday arrest. A Class C felony is punishable by a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of up to $5,000.

Both Brooks and Henninger were taken to the Penobscot County Jail after being arrested Friday. Brooks and Henninger made their first appearances in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Monday. Brooks’ bail was set at $1,000 cash, and Henninger was released by the court on her own recognizance, a jail official said. Brooks remained in jail on Monday evening.
