ALBION – The Maine Attorney General’s Office has initiated an investigation into the shooting death Monday night of an Albion man by a Maine state trooper.

The shooting took place about 8:30 p.m. during a confrontation on Main Street, where the man reportedly was wielding a shotgun after a domestic violence disturbance.

Johnathan Sullivan, 34, died in an ambulance awaiting transport from the scene by a LifeFlight air ambulance, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Tuesday.

State police along with deputies from the Waldo and Kennebec County Sheriff’s Departments went to the scene after a domestic assault was reported by Sullivan’s wife.

“Trooper Derrick Record, who was the first police officer to arrive, got into an armed confrontation with Sullivan outside Sullivan’s home,” McCausland said.

Sullivan lived in the home with his wife and two children, and McCausland said he was unaware of any previous criminal record for Sullivan.

No one else was injured in the incident, McCausland said.

“As with any police-involved shooting, the state Attorney General’s Office is investigating,” McCausland said. State police also had an investigation unit at the scene.

Record, who is a 10-year veteran of the state police and patrols out of the Troop C barracks in Skowhegan, has been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard operating procedure for the Maine State Police while a shooting is being investigated.
