Camp event for kids with autism, Asperger

The Maine Junior Engineering Technical Society and the Maine Mathematics Science and Engineering Talent Search is offering a Summer and Fall Recreational Educational Experience for grades three-nine with high-functioning autism and Asperger syndrome.

The programs are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. the weeks of Aug. 10, Aug. 17 and Oct. 13, at Camp CaPella in Dedham.

Tuition is $290 a week. Some scholarships are available for qualifying students.

Activities range from LEGO robotics to problem solving, puzzles, origami and waterfront activities including swimming and boating.

A portion of the revenue from this program will benefit regular CaPella programs for campers with disabilities.

Program designer and co-director Dr. Eva Szillery reports the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor “is accepting the families of our campers” who would like to stay there, and the Lucerne Inn, one mile from Camp CaPella, is offering camper families a $70-a-night room rate for the five nights of the program.

The next Belfast Garden Club Open Garden Day is 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the home of Diane Coller Wilson, 124 Charles St., Belfast.

Hers is described as an English country-style garden, and the suggested donation is $3 to support BGC civic beautification projects.

Jeff Franklin reports that as part of Caribou Cares About Kids Week, Caribou Kiwanis Club will hold a strawberry shortcake sale, 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at Teague Park, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, in the parking lot beside the courthouse, and from noon to 4 p.m. at Teague Park.

Proceeds benefit Kiwanis youth activities.

St. Croix Quilters Guild and Washington County Community College will hold a show of contemporary and traditional quilts 1-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at St. Croix Hall on the WCCC campus on U.S. Route 1.

Admission is $3. Proceeds benefit the Beckett Center in Calais and the WCCC Scholarship Fund.

Proceeds from a Mountain Folk quilt raffle will benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor, and proceeds from a silent auction of traditional, contemporary, vintage and art quilts will benefit the Sunrise County Dialysis Center in Eastport.

Audrey Peasly wrote that the KEEPERS of the Old Baptist Church Preservation Fund will hold a yard sale 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the clubhouse at Brooksville Corner.

River City Wesleyan Church will hold a yard sale 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the church, 146 Center St., Bangor.

Proceeds “will support the efforts of our church” to help a congregation family going through “a difficult set of circumstances,” Phyllis Hanscom wrote.

Illness that prevents the father from working and a leaking roof have made the family’s “only full bathroom nearly unusable,” wrote Hanscom.

“The money raised will be used to purchase supplies to rebuild the bathroom,” and purchase a pellet stove and pellets “to help them heat their older home,” she wrote.

Donations of gently used items in good condition are being accepted, and Sarah Keezer, 947-7620, can arrange for delivery.

The sale includes household goods, toys, baby items and refreshments.

To make a cash donation, checks can be sent to the church, noting the gift is for The James Project, which Hanscom explained is “a small Bible group study … where we are taught to put our faith into action.”

Beth Beal wrote that Brewer High School Class of 1942 will hold its 66th reunion meeting at noon Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Howard Johnson on Odlin Road in Bangor.

Ivy Turner reports takeout is available at the Perry Congregational Church Women’s Fellowship baked bean and ham supper 4:30-6 p.m. Saturday Aug. 9, at the church.

Admission is $7 for adults, $3 for children.
