HAMPDEN – A convicted felon wanted in Maryland on theft charges was arrested late Monday night after running from a residence on Manning Mill Road, according to Hampden Police Chief Joe Rogers.

Police were responding to a report of a verbal argument at 106 Manning Road, but when they arrived they learned that the suspect had fled on foot, Rogers said. Before fleeing, Daniel Roberts, 44, had done some damage to the home he was sharing with the victim and threatened to harm the woman, according to Rogers. Roberts fled the home when the victim called police.

Officers learned that Roberts was a convicted felon wanted in Maryland on theft charges. Concerned that he might be armed, Hampden police called in the state police tracking dog, along with the state’s tactical unit and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team.

Roberts was arrested behind the home after a brief search, Rogers said.

He was charged with domestic violence criminal threatening and criminal mischief, both Class D crimes.

District Court Judge Susan Sparaco of Augusta on Tuesday set bail at $300 cash with conditions that Roberts not return to the Hampden residence, have no contact with the victim who lives there and not use alcohol or illegal drugs.

But he was not expected to be released because Maryland officials intended to extradite Roberts. Rogers was unsure Tuesday of the details regarding the out-of-state theft.

A trial date on the Maine charges was set for Sept. 2. If convicted, Roberts faces up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.
