PARIS – A Sumner man charged with murder in the shooting deaths of two men in West Paris was ordered held without bail on Tuesday.
Duane Waterman, 32, made his initial appearance in Oxford County Superior Court a day after state police detectives arrested him while he was fishing with his two children on Brettuns Pond next to Route 4 in Livermore. A bail hearing is scheduled for September.
Waterman is accused in the killings of Timothy Mayberry, 50, and Todd Smith, 43, whose bodies were found July 26 on Mayberry’s property in West Paris. Both victims died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the state medical examiner’s office.
Stephen McCausland of the Department of Public Safety said the three men were friends, but state police detectives have not hinted at any theories as to what led to the fatal shootings.
No additional details were forthcoming on Tuesday because state police affidavits laying out evidence to support Waterman’s arrest were impounded.
Last week, the state police tactical squad assisted in serving a search warrant on Waterman’s home in Sumner. Police gathered evidence at the home for three days. McCausland said Waterman was questioned and released after the search warrant was issued.
According to the arrest report, the killings occurred between 9:30 and 10:45 p.m. Friday, July 25.
Mayberry’s body was spotted the next afternoon alongside a stone wall outside his home. Police who were called to the scene found the body of Smith inside Mayberry’s house.
Waterman was arrested without incident and taken to the Oxford County Jail. McCausland said Waterman’s children have been living with his parents and will remain there.
