BANGOR – A 52-year-old Franklin man was killed Tuesday night when the two-seater ultralight plane he was piloting crashed into Taunton Bay near Franklin.

The man’s 8-year-old daughter was pulled out of the water and taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor where she was “stabilized,” according to Trooper Cliff Peterson of the Maine State Police. “Her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening,” he said.

Peterson said some bystanders also pulled the pilot out of the water and administered CPR but the man was not revived.

The names of the victims were not being released pending the anticipated Wednesday arrival of officials with the National Transportation Safety Board, who were expected to take over the investigation.

Peterson said Rick Taylor, who lives on the South Bay Road across the bay, witnessed the plane going down and reported the accident at 7:27 p.m. The trooper said other witnesses also reported the plane appeared to be flying in circles too low to the water when it went down about 200 yards off Dwelley Point.

The plane had taken off from a private airstrip in Franklin, but Peterson said he was still conducting interviews and was unsure of exactly what time it took off or where it was headed.

Also responding were members of the Franklin Fire Department, County Ambulance of Ellsworth, Maine Marine Patrol and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

“We’re not releasing a lot of information because NTSB will be taking over the investigation in the morning,” Peterson said late Tuesday night.
