Monarch displays at 2 public libraries

The Pittsfield Public Library and the Hartland Public Library are hosts to monarch displays and tagging and releasing sessions.

The libraries raise monarch butterflies beginning as 3-day-old caterpillars. They are cared for and on view at the library, where visitors and patrons are invited watch their transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis to adult butterfly.

Adult butterflies are wing-tagged and released outside to begin their migration to Mexico.

The emergence and tagging calendar will help visitors to know when to stop by to view the tagging and release sessions. Educational materials and books compliment the display.

The project is funded through a grant from Cornerstones of Science and is in conjunction with the University of Kansas Monarch Watch program.

Special children’s programs on monarchs will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 13, at the Hartland Public Library and at 11 a.m. Aug. 14, at Pittsfield Public Library.
