NEW YORK – Burt’s Bees is one of a group personal care products companies that have signed on to a plan that aims to help consumers find natural hair and skin products.

The Natural Products Association announced the program, which would set industry guidelines, certify natural products, and put a seal on packaging so customers can identify products that have been approved.

Burt’s Bees, which was founded in Maine and is now based in North Carolina, sells makeup, lotions, hair care products, sunscreens and products for babies and men.

The labels should start to appear on products in the next few months.

In order to be certified, a product would have to be made from at least 95 percent truly natural ingredients or ingredients that are derived from natural sources, there can be no ingredients with any potential suspected human health risks, and the product cannot be processed in a way that significantly or adversely affects the purity or effect of the natural ingredients or uses synthetic or harsh chemicals.

Other manufacturers involved include Aubrey Organics, Badger Balm, Farmaesthetics, Trilogy Fragrances, Weleda and California Baby.
