Motorist rams into paving roller in Weston

WESTON – An 83-year-old man was injured Wednesday when the car he was driving smashed into a piece of heavy equipment on Route 1.

Around 8:30 a.m. the Houlton Regional Communication Center received a report of a serious accident on Route 1 in Weston.

John Vincent, residence not provided, was driving a 1995 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck and was headed south on Route 1 when he crashed into a pavement roller. The crash occurred in a construction zone where a paving project was under way. Vincent’s was the last vehicle in a line of traffic that had been going through the construction site. Witnesses reported that Vincent veered off into the northbound lane and crashed head-on into the roller, the Maine State Police said in a press release.

Donna Celino, 46, of Mattawamkeag was operating the roller. Celino attempted to maneuver the roller to avoid the crash, but was unable to do so.

Vincent was taken a short distance from the scene by Downeast EMS and then taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Police are still investigating the accident but suspect a medical condition may have contributed to the crash.

Maine State Police Sgt. Julie Bergan and Troopers Chuck Michaud and Dennis Quaint, as well as Downeast EMS and Danforth Fire and Rescue, went to the scene.
