EAST MILLINOCKET – The No. 5 paper machine at the Katahdin Paper Co. LLC mill was shut down for more than two hours Wednesday night when fire damaged a motor on the machine, firefighters said Thursday.
Reported at about 6 p.m., the fire damaged several wire trays on its way to a ceiling vent before firefighters responding to the alarm, 50 Main St., got it under control, Fire Capt. Peter Larlee said.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters spent about two hours at the mill making sure the fire did not spread before being dismissed at about 8:15 p.m., Larlee said. Eight town firefighters responded, while six came from the Medway Fire Department as mutual aid.
The No. 5 machine produced coated specialty papers. It is one of two primary paper machines at the mill, which produces telephone directory paper.
The mill is operated by Fraser Papers for Katahdin Paper Co. LLC, one of several subsidiaries for Brookfield Asset Management.
