AUGUSTA – The rain-plagued State American Legion baseball tournament, originally scheduled to be completed Wednesday, will not resume until Saturday due to inability of Morton and McGuire fields to dry sufficiently for play.
The original 10-team field was pared to four after Tuesday’s action, with Nova Seafood of Portland the lone remaining undefeated team in the double-elimination event while Gardiner, Gayton Post of Lewiston and Bessey Motors of South Paris each has one loss.
Gardiner was scheduled to play Gayton Post and Nova Seafood was to face Bessey Motors on Wednesday but those games were postponed, and according to an update Thursday on the Augusta Babe Ruth baseball Web site, those games now will not be played until Saturday, weather permitting.
All remaining games will be played at McGuire Field, with Saturday’s schedule having the Gardiner-Gayton matchup at noon and the Nova Seafood-Bessey Motors contest at 4 p.m.
The championship game is now set for noon Sunday, with an if-necessary game scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Maine champion will advance to the Northeast Regional scheduled for Aug. 14-18 at Bristol, Conn.
