The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife is hosting the 11th annual Becoming an Outdoorswoman introductory skills weekend.

The program will run from Sept. 19-21 and will be held at Camp Caribou on Pattee Pond in Winslow.

The workshop is designed for women over the age of 18 who are interested in gaining new skills or improving their skills in hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreation.

Participants will have the chance to try a variety of outdoor activities under the supervision of experienced instructors and guides.

The cost is $210, which covers food, lodging and the use of all equipment.

Some of the topics that will be covered are kayaking, outdoor survival, firearms use and range safety, GPS map and compass, archery, trapping, turkey hunting, duck hunting, fly casting and tying, bow hunting, trip planning, outdoor cooking, ropes course, retriever training, basic fishing and biking.

A complete hunter safety certification course is available as a course option for the weekend.

Kayaking symposium set

The third annual Downeast Sea Kayaking Symposium is scheduled in Bar Harbor on Sept. 5-9.

The symposium is for beginners to advanced and classes are available each day or for all four days. The four-day cost is $475, $135 for a full day, and $70 for a half day.
