DEXTER – A highway in central Maine now bears the name of a prominent Maine philanthropist who died last fall at age 93.

On Friday, the state Department of Transportation dedicated Route 7, from Corinna to Garland, as the Harold Alfond Memorial Highway. The road passes through Dexter, the town where Alfond founded the Dexter Shoe Co. 50 years ago.

Officials unveiled a sign at the Corinna town line designating the highway in memory of Alfond. His name also is found on medical centers, sports arenas and other buildings in Maine.
