CHARLESTON – An 87-year-old local woman was killed Sunday afternoon when the car in which she was a passenger was struck by a pickup truck driven by an 84-year-old Milo woman who ran a stop sign.

Margaret Higgins was a passenger in a 1995 Nissan Maxima driven by her son, Carroll Higgins, 66, of Lincoln, according to Maine State Police.

The Nissan was headed west on the Charleston Road about 12:30 p.m. Sunday when it was struck by a 2007 Chevrolet pickup driven by Elaine Carey, 84. Carey, according to Lt. Chris Coleman, spokesman for the state police, ran the stop sign on Atkinson Road and T-boned the Higgins car.

Margaret Higgins was pronounced dead at Eastern Maine Medical Center after being taken to the Bangor hospital.

Carey and her passenger, Arlene Morrill, 83, of Bangor, suffered minor injuries, according to police, and were taken to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. Carroll Higgins also suffered minor injuries but did not require medical attention at the scene.

All the drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts, according to police. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Trooper Kyle Willette and Deputy Jamie Kane of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene late Sunday afternoon to reconstruct the accident.

Once the investigation has been completed, Coleman said, Piscataquis County District Attorney R. Christopher Almy will determine whether charges will be filed.
