BEDDINGTON – A 31-year old Brewer man was killed over the weekend after he fell off an all-terrain vehicle he was riding and struck a steel beam.
Ryan Webber was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:17 p.m. Saturday.
Around 12:30 p.m. Webber and his friend Matthew Craine, 30, also of Brewer were riding their ATVs on the East Beddington Lake Road when one of the ATVs went to the side of the road to avoid a puddle, Sgt. Dan Menard of the Maine Warden Service said Monday.
“The [one] ATV made contact with the other ATV which sent the ATV operated by Ryan Webber out of control. It went off the left-hand side of the road,” Menard added.
It appears that Webber fell off his machine and struck a steel I-beam that was stuck in the ground to hold a large metal gate. He landed alongside it, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said in a news release.
Craine administered CPR, but was unsuccessful.
Rescue personnel arrived about 25 minutes later, Menard said. A LifeFlight helicopter out of Bangor was called, but Webber was pronounced dead at the scene.
Webber and Craine were wearing helmets.
Wardens Alan Gillis, Wade Carter and Sgt. Kevin Adams were investigating the incident.
