Two teenagers arrested in Orrington explosion

A flash of bright light and a massive boom that echoed over Fields Pond in Orrington early Saturday morning brought out the local fire department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department deputies.

Orrington Fire Chief Mike Spencer arrived at the boat launch first at around 2:15 a.m. to find two people hiding in the woods by the pond, Deputy Chad Young said Monday.

Alexander Workman, 19, of Hampden and Patrick Brochu, 18, of Orrington were found with mineral spirits, aerosol cans and a BB gun that they apparently were using to create the explosions.

“It made a rather large blast off [that] was big enough that the complainant was able to see it,” Young said.

Workman and Brochu both were charged with criminal use of explosives and criminal trespass. The boat launch is owned by the Fields Pond Audubon Society and is posted closed from dusk to dawn.

If convicted of criminal use of explosives, the two could face up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $5,000. Both posted $300 cash bonds and were released from jail later on Saturday. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)

Bangor police are on the lookout for a man who walked into a Hammond Street bookstore Monday afternoon, brandished a weapon and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Lt. Jeff Millard said a tall, thin man wearing baggy pants and a black T-shirt robbed Betts Bookstore just before 4 p.m. and then fled on foot. He said the man was described as having a beard and short curly hair. Millard said witnesses indicated that the man last was seen behind the bookstore and may have left on a bicycle.

Police are not releasing what type of weapon was used. Millard said he didn’t know how many people, if any, were inside the store when the robbery took place. Anyone with information about the robbery may contact the Bangor Police Department at 947-7384. (Eric Russell, BDN)

An Indian Island woman who spat in the face of a deputy who was arresting her for domestic assault has been charged with assault on a police officer, Sgt. Scott Young of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said Monday.

Jessie Feare, 26, was arrested around 7:20 a.m. Saturday after she allegedly threw a roll of toilet paper at her boyfriend, flipped a table and assaulted him after he “shoved her out of a tent she had been living in,” Young said, reading from the police report.

If convicted of assaulting the police officer, Feare could face up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.

Two Old Town police units assisted the arresting deputy when Feare resisted, the sergeant said. She was released on bail Saturday afternoon, a jail official said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
