Former player joins UM sports administration

ORONO – Katie Clark Herbine, a former member of the University of Maine women’s basketball team which made four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, has returned to the Black Bears as the associate athletic director for compliance and senior woman administrator, UMaine athletic director Blake James announced recently.

“I am happy to be back at the University of Maine in an administrative role,” said Herbine, a former Bangor High basketball star.

“It is a great step for me professionally and I look forward to working with the student-athletes, coaches and staff at Maine. I had a tremendous experience at Maine as a student-athlete and anticipate the same quality experience as an employee of this great school.”

At Maine, Herbine will oversee Maine’s compliance with NCAA rules and regulation.

After Maine, Herbine attended the New England School of Law in Boston, where she received a Juris Doctorate in June of 2003. She then went on to practice law at the Law Office of Henry Paul Johnson in Naples, Fla., and at the Tarbell Professional Association in Augusta.

In 2005, Herbine was named the physical activity requirement coordinator, head women’s cross country coach and assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Maine-Farmington. She was responsible for administering the general education physical activity curriculum.

Herbine is a member of the Florida, Maine, and American Bar Associations. She is also a member of the Governor’s Council on Health, Physical Activity and Wellness, serving as the ACES Committee Chair.

Herbine received a bachelor of arts degree in history with a concentration in political science from Maine in June 2000. She was a member of the women’s basketball team from 1996-2000, serving as captain during the 1999-2000 season.

Bessey, Boothby to be inducted

Southern Maine Community College in South Portland has announced its 2008 Hall of Fame class, with Scott Bessey and Dan Boothby being the inductees.

They will be honored at an Oct. 5 banquet at the HUB Athletics Center on campus.

Bessey was a guard on the 1995 and 1996 men’s basketball teams that made consecutive trips to the National Small College Athletic Association National Tournament.

He ranks second all-time in points (1,245) and seventh in assists (165) in program history. Bessey is currently vice president for technical support services and is an assistant for the Cheverus of Portland boys basketball team.

Boothby played two season of soccer (1993, 1994), and led SMCC to a pair of conference titles. He compiled 38 goals, second all-time in school history. He is the general manager at the Diamond Edge Restaurant on Great Diamond Island.
